Murphys Hotel & Hill Walking in the North-West of Ireland
Walking in the North-West of Ireland Walkers of all abilities will find Sligo a true delight. For those seeking a gentler experience, there are plenty of waymarked routes which are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The local people are also unreservedly friendly, hospitable and helpful. The scenery is what draws most walkers to Co Sligo, but there’s a lot more waiting to be discovered.

There is a lot to choose from; Ox Mountains, Lough Talt, Sligo Way, Foxford Way and The Miners & Historical Trails. The combined length of these trails is 280km. The Ox Mountains less than 10km from Tubbercurry are of particular interest geologically, as they are among the oldest found in Ireland dating from 600 to 1500 million years old and would generally be 350 million years old. This mountain range is one of Ireland’s least explored secrets with undisturbed flora and fauna. Sligo is a Megalithic Tomb hotspot with one of the highest concentrations of Neolithic passage tombs in Ireland, the most spectacular of which are Carrowmore and Carrowkeel. Benbulben and Knocknarea Mountains are iconic landmarks for the region. Benbulben with its flat top and western end pointed out to the sea. Knocknarea famous for its 60m hilltop cairn Queen Maeve’s Grave. Both mountains have fantastic views over Sligo bay.
